Frankie Edgar, perhaps the UFC's most unappreciated star, is chasing history

LAS VEGAS – When Frankie Edgar bounds into the Octagon on Saturday to challenge Jose Aldo for the featherweight title in the main event of UFC 156 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, it will be nearly six years to the day since he made his debut with the company.

And yet, despite all the wins, despite all the great fights, despite rocketing up the UFC record book, Edgar still seems to be perhaps the most unappreciated star in the game.

Frankie Edgar hopes to have his arms raised after his seventh straight UFC title fight. He defeated the highly regarded Tyson Griffin in his UFC debut on Feb. 3, 2007, winning Fight of the Night honors in the process, and has been one of the company's elite fighters ever since.

Edgar fought a legendary trilogy against Gray Maynard, but his fight with Aldo may turn out to be the most significant challenge he's faced.

Maynard is a wrestler whose nickname of "The Bully" is an apt description of his fighting style. He's usually able to bully opponents into position with his wrestling.

But when he went to Brazil to train with Aldo last year, he experienced an entirely different story. During practice, he shot on Aldo and went for a double leg takedown. He pushed Aldo back up against the cage.

Juan Pablo Montoya takes Ganassi No. 01 to finish line in Rolex 24 win

The No. 01 was driven by Charlie Kimball, Juan Pablo Montoya, Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas

The finish of the Daytona Prototype division in the Rolex 24 Grand-Am race at Daytona came down to pit strategy and the dominant car prevailed.

Juan Pablo Montoya pitted from the lead in Chip Ganassi's No. 01 BMW Riley -- the strongest car for much of the race's 24 hours -- with just under seven minutes left and was able to retake the lead and the win just minutes later after Max Angelelli in the No. 10 pitted for fuel.

A caution flag with approximately an hour to go set up the fuel-strategy filled sprint to the finish, as most of the DP cars were just outside their fuel windows. Last year's champion, the No. 60 of Michael Shank Racing that had AJ Allmendinger in the car for the final stint, made it to the finish without having to stop for fuel but was out of contention after being forced off into the grass and a subsequent pit stop to clean the grille.

Allmendinger was aggressive after the final restart, and got to the outside of Joao Barbosa, and Barbosa pushed Allmendinger up as far as he could, sending Allmendinger into the grass and then onto pit lane. The move also destroyed Barbosa and the No. 9 Starworks team's chances, as he was penalized 60 seconds for avoidable contact. The No. 60, also driven by Marcos Ambrose and Justin Wilson, finished third, and the No. 9 finished fourth.

Montoya, Pruett, Memo Rojas and Charlie Kimball completed 709 laps over the course of the race. It's Pruett's fifth Rolex 24 DP win.

Ganassi's other car, the No. 02 with Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon, Jamie McMurray and Joey Hand, suffered damage and lost laps when McMurray made contact with the pit road wall overnight and then retired on Sunday morning when Franchitti had a gearbox failure.

In the GT division, Felipe Albequerque drove the No. 24 Audi to victory lane after pitting late and getting off of pit lane ahead of the Nos. 52 and 69, who had been battling for the race lead before pitting with approximately 45 minutes to go. In the new GX class, David Donohue drove the No. 16 to the finish line, one of the three of six cars in the class to make it to the finish of the race.

Clint Bowyer and Michael Waltrip, who shared the No. 56 GT Ferrari with Rob Kauffman and Rui Aguas, finished 8th.

Andy Murray beats Federer to set up Australian Open final v Djokovic

Andy Murray battled past Roger Federer in five sets to reach his third Australian Open and sixth Grand Slam final.
The Briton, seeded third, will face world number one Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final after beating Federer 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 6-2.
It required a dramatic four hours on Rod Laver Arena, with Murray dominating for the most part but Federer's brilliance keeping him alive.
The Scot served superbly, firing down 21 aces, only for Federer to dominate the two tie-breaks.
And after failing to serve out the match in the fourth set, it looked as though Murray might have missed his chance when it came down to a fifth.
However, just like he did in winning his first major title at the US Open, Murray rose to the occasion in the deciding set and raced away with it.
"It's always tough against him, when he plays in Slams is when he plays his best tennis," said Murray.

Dimitar Berbatov: Old Trafford outcast to Fulham's fulcrum

As far as Dimitar Berbatov is concerned it is about four years too late but, when his Fulham side step out at Old Trafford in the FA Cup on Saturday, he will finally get to play there for a team devoted to getting the best out of his mercurial talents.
It will not be lost on Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson that a side set up especially to exploit the sometimes brilliant Bulgarian arrives struggling badly for form but, for Berbatov, his first return to his former club is a chance to show his old boss he was wrong to discard him.
